Fear-Free Pediatric Dentistry in Atwater Village: How We Help Your Child Feel Calm at the Dentist
As a mom of two and a pediatric dentist serving Atwater Village, Silver Lake, Los Feliz, and the surrounding East LA communities, I know firsthand how intimidating a dental visit can feel for both children and parents. Creating a truly anxiety-free dental experience for kids was the entire reason I founded Oui Smile Pediatric Dentistry.
I wanted to create something different for our community, including a calm environment where options like pediatric sedation can be discussed when a child needs extra support during care.
I wanted children in Atwater Village and nearby neighborhoods to walk into the Oui Smile office and feel calm, welcomed, and safe; not overwhelmed by bright lights, loud noises, and clinical surroundings. That’s why our office doesn’t look like a typical pediatric dental office. Many local parents tell me it feels more like a spa than a dental practice.
That was exactly the goal.
A Pediatric Dental Office in Atwater Village Designed for Relaxation
Every detail of our Atwater Village dental office was intentionally designed with children’s comfort in mind.
From our open-concept layout and calming color palette to our playroom and soft, natural lighting, everything was chosen to help children feel relaxed the moment they walk through the door. We wanted our pediatric dental office to feel comforting rather than clinical—a place where children can explore, play, and build positive associations with dental care that last a lifetime.
As someone who believes deeply in the connection between our environment and our nervous system, I also incorporated aromatherapy throughout the office. You’ll notice subtle citrus and orange scents throughout the space. Studies on ambient citrus aromas suggest they can support feelings of calm and well-being—making them a natural fit for a child-centered dental environment.
Why Children Develop Dental Anxiety and What We’re Doing About It
One of the biggest causes of dental anxiety in children is uncertainty. Kids become nervous when they don’t know what’s happening or feel like they have no control. That’s why communication is a cornerstone of every visit at our Atwater Village pediatric dental practice.
As a gentle dentist for children, I take the time to explain every step using age-appropriate language kids can actually understand.
You’ll rarely hear words like “needle,” “shot,” “hurt,” “pinch,” or “sharp” at Oui Smile. Those words can trigger anxiety even in adults. Instead, we use child-friendly language
and a little imagination to help kids understand what’s happening—without creating unnecessary fear. Our goal is always honesty paired with genuine reassurance.
Showing Instead of Telling: Our Approach to Anxiety-Free Kids’ Dentistry
One of my favorite fear-reduction techniques is modeling. If a child has an older sibling, I’ll often invite the younger child to “help” during the sibling’s exam. They get to watch, ask questions, and see that nothing scary is happening. By the time it’s their turn, they’re often excited and confident.
When siblings aren’t available, stuffed animals become our patients. We demonstrate exactly what will happen during the visit so children can see and understand the process before experiencing it themselves.
When children know what to expect, they feel more comfortable—and are far more likely to walk away from the dentist with a smile.
Parents Are the Most Powerful Part of Fear-Free Dentistry
The most important part of anxiety-free dentistry for kids doesn’t happen in our office. It starts at home.
Children are incredibly perceptive. They take emotional cues from their parents. If they sense that Mom or Dad is nervous about the dentist, they may assume there’s something to fear. As parents, we play a powerful role in shaping how our children experience new situations—and dental visits are no different.
Simple changes make a big difference:
- Speak positively about dental visits in everyday conversation
- Avoid sharing your own negative dental experiences with your child
- Read books or watch age-appropriate shows about visiting the dentist
- Pretend-play dental visits at home using a toothbrush and mirror
- Use encouraging, matter-of-fact language before appointments
When children see their parents calm and confident, they feel the same way.
