White Crowns vs. Silver Crowns: What’s Best for Your Child?

When it comes to your child’s smile, I understand how emotional dental decisions can feel.  As both a pediatric dentist and a mom of two, I truly put myself in every parent’s shoes  when discussing treatment options for tooth repair in children.

One of the most common questions I hear is:

“Can my child get white dental crowns instead of silver crowns?”

The short answer is: sometimes yes but not always.

And when I recommend one type of crown over another, it’s never about convenience or  preference. It’s about what will best protect your child’s teeth long term.

Understanding Pediatric Crowns

When baby teeth have large cavities or damage, pediatric crowns are often the best way to  restore and protect the tooth until it naturally falls out.

The two most common options are:

• Silver crowns (stainless steel crowns)

• White dental crowns for kids (typically zirconia crowns)

Both can be excellent treatment options, but each child’s mouth is different. Why Parents Often Prefer White Dental Crowns for Kids

I completely understand why many parents ask for white crowns. Honestly, as a mom, I  understand it deeply.

Silver crowns can feel noticeable, especially with social media trends and videos that  sometimes make children feel self-conscious about dental work. Many parents worry their  child could be teased or judged.

That’s one reason I offer zirconia crowns, beautiful white crowns that blend naturally with  your child’s smile. But part of caring for families means being honest about the limitations, too. Not Every Child Is a Good Candidate for White Crowns. White zirconia crowns are strong and durable, but they are not always the safest or best  option for every child.  One of the biggest concerns is teeth grinding (bruxism).

Why Grinding Matters

Zirconia is an extremely hard material, almost like a polished stone. When a child grinds  heavily, that hard surface can repeatedly press against the natural opposing teeth.

Over time, this may increase the risk of:

• Excessive tooth wear

• Sensitivity

• Damage to healthy teeth

• In severe cases, nerve exposure or infection

This is one reason I am very selective about using white crowns on back baby teeth.

As a Los Angeles pediatric dentist, my goal is never just to create a beautiful smile for today. It’s to  protect your child’s oral health for years to come.

White Crowns Can Also Take More Time

Another important factor is treatment time.  Placing white dental crowns for kids requires a very precise fit and technique. Compared to  silver crowns, the process is usually longer and more detailed.

For children receiving treatment while awake, this means they need to comfortably sit  through a longer appointment. In some cases, treatment may take 20–30 minutes longer  than traditional silver crowns.

Some children handle this beautifully. Others may feel overwhelmed, anxious, or fatigued and that matters, too.

What About Front Teeth?

Parents often ask if I would place a silver crown on a front tooth.

Personally, I rarely recommend that for young children unless absolutely necessary. Front  teeth are much more visible, and esthetics can play an important role in a child’s  confidence.

In many cases, white crowns are a wonderful option for front teeth.

Every Child Deserves an Individualized Approach One of the most important things I want parents to know is this:

There is no “one-size-fits-all” solution in pediatric dentistry.

If I ever recommend against a white crown for your child, it’s never because I don’t offer  them or because I’m dismissing your concerns. It’s because I genuinely care about  protecting your child’s long-term dental health.

The best treatment decisions happen when parents feel informed, supported, and never  judged.

As both a mom and a pediatric dentist, that’s the kind of care I would want for my own  children and the kind of care I strive to provide for every family who walks into my office.
